This species easily can be confused with the closely related
Viola reichenbachiana. However its flowers are much larger
(25-35 cm long instead of 10-20 cm) its flowering period also much
late (May instead of March-April) the petals usually have not a
darker spot at the base above the whitish unguicula, and the spur is
whitish and pointing upwards (not darker than the corolla and
straight or pointing downwards). Also the habitat of riviniana
seems to be in wetter places from the valleys and damper
grasslands inside the forests and in their immediate vicinity.
Cheile Valisoarei natural reservation area, beech forests,
Trascau Mountains, Alba county, 23rd of May 2010.
